Sporting Director & Head Coach Frank Yallop
On the match:
“Anytime you’re losing four zero at halftime, a lot of things can happen from that. The response of the team and the efforts from all of the players and staff was amazing in the second half for me. Because it can go two ways, you quit and it ends up eight or nine to zero, or you dig in. And we got two goals back, hit the crossbar and had some other chances that we could’ve maybe gotten something out of the match. So from a coach’s perspective I’m very happy with our fight back. We’ve got a lot to work on. Having said that, we were in Phoenix against the best team in the West, but our second half performance was amazing.”
On Jesse Maldonado and Adrian Rebollar debuts:
“They were excellent. Adrian [Rebollar] scored, Jesse [Maldonado] is a hometown hero sort of in this city. It was great to have him on the field. I’m really happy with all of the guys. We didn’t quit, our second half was amazing really for being four zero down, that’s really tough in soccer. I was really happy with how they came out and did in that second half.”
On Seku Conneh scoring the first goal in club history:
“It was good. Seku [Conneh] is not 100% fit, he’s had some visa issues that had him hanging out in Holland, but we’ve got him in the building now. He’s been training for only a week. He looks dangerous, he’s strong, he’s got some power as well. It was a great goal, a great ball in, a very nice cross, great header. Then Adrian [Rebollar] scored as well, so I’m really happy with both of those guys scoring the first goals for the club.”
Defender Hugh Roberts
On the positives of the match:
“It was our first game in history, and the intensity in the second half was positive. I love the fight that we had. We need that. We can play good ball, we played much better in the second half. I think maybe in the first half there were a little jitters, then we calmed down. It’s unfortunate that a goal happened in the first two minutes, but it was all because of our mistakes. We are going to learn from these mistakes and keep working to minimize them and then we are going to get much better. I’m not too mad about this result because we are going to keep building and we fought back with an intensity that I love.”
On looking ahead to Colorado Springs:
“We need to find our identity and do our thing. I think in the second half we kind of found ourselves, but now we’ve got to keep this intensity going. We need to build off this half and keep the trajectory upwards. We don’t want to go backwards, we’re going to keep learning from these things. Going into Colorado will be another hostile environment, but tonight was a great test for us to get ready for it. I’m confident we’re going to build off of this.”
Midfielder Adrian Rebollar
On playing in his first professional game:
“It was a little nerve wracking, but I know that I put in the work since the offseason and coming into preseason with the team. Ever since I joined the team I’ve felt very welcome, so I’m just super happy about all of it to be honest.”
On the result:
“Obviously it is not the result that we wanted. I think we did a great job in the second half picking up the energy, playing a little bit better, winning some tackles and it showed with our two goals. It was tough going down four, but we know we gave it all and it’s definitely something to build on for the next game.”
On his first professional goal:
“I was initially going to try to hit it one-time, but I really felt like I was probably going to send it over the post, so I took a little breath. Frank [Yallop] has been telling me to get a little bit more relaxed in front of the goal and I did that. His advice worked. I’m happy it went in.”
On the positives moving forward:
“We saw in the second half that we can compete with any team in the league. It’s always tough to go on the road, but we saw here that we have the fight, the heart and the desire. We are going to work hard every game.”
