Monterey Bay Battles Indy Eleven in the Return of the Union to Seaside on Star Wars Night at Cardinale Stadium

SEASIDE, California (Friday, May 3, 2024) – Monterey Bay F.C. (4-2-2, 14 points) returns to action Saturday for an epic 7 p.m. PT showdown on Star Wars Night at Cardinale Stadium against Indy Eleven (2-4-2, 8 points) in Week 9 of the 2024 USL Championship regular season. Saturday’s match will be broadcast locally via KION on FOX 35 (46.2 over the air, 35 Dish, 47 DirecTV and 3/702 HD Xfinity), with live streaming available on CBS Sports Golazo Network via Paramount+, the CBS Sports app, CBSSports.com, and Pluto TV.

Monterey Bay returns to Seaside after two weeks on the road against Memphis – a come-from-behind win – and Orange County – a loss in which the Union failed to score for the first time so far in the campaign. With the dust settled on the recent road trip, the Crisp-and-Kelp now find themselves in third place in the Western Conference. Monterey Bay is five matches unbeaten against Eastern Conference opponents at Cardinale Stadium heading into this weekend’s match, and will look to make it a six with a result against Indy Eleven.

“It’s a big match for us, Indy Eleven is a good squad,” said Monterey Bay F.C. forward Michael Gonzalez. “Coming off of a loss, we want to get that momentum going again and there’s no better way to do that than getting a win at home. We’re undefeated here so far because our fans have done so well in supporting us. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to go on runs like this. Hopefully they will all come out again, enjoy the night, and help us get another win.”

In the other corner, Indy Eleven makes the trip to Seaside on the back of a 2-1 win over Championship expansion side North Carolina FC. Prior to that win, however, Indy Eleven drew 1-1 with Colorado Springs to end a three-game losing slide. All told, Indy Eleven now sits just above the line in 8th place in the Eastern Conference through eight weeks of regular season play.

In the two previous meetings between the interconference sides, Monterey Bay came out victorious. The first-ever fixture between MBFC and Indy took place in Seaside and resulted in the Crisp-and-Kelp running away with a 5-0 victory – the most goals scored in a single match for Monterey Bay to date. Then the following season, the two sides met up at Michael A. Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis and despite being down 2-1 at the halftime break, Monterey Bay managed to score two second-half goals to win 3-2 and bring the overall series lead to 2-0-0 with a positive 8-2 goal difference. The two clubs will now meet again for a third time this weekend. With the fixture moving back to Seaside, Monterey Bay is primed to continue its positive season with a third consecutive win over Indy Eleven.

“It’s an important match, especially since we are coming off a loss,” said Monterey Bay F.C. defender Carlos Guzmán. “It’s going to be a hard one, but we are confident because we are at home and we’re playing well. We’re still undefeated here at home and we want to keep that going. The fans really give us that push that we need, so it’s a huge thing to have a full stadium behind us.”

Monterey Bay Held Scoreless for First Time in 2024, Falls 2-0 to Orange County SC in Irvine

IRVINE, California (Saturday, April 27, 2024) – Monterey Bay F.C. (4-2-2, 14 points) was defeated 2-0 by Orange County SC (4-1-3, 15 points) at Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine. Despite 10 chances created and six shots on target overall, the Crisp-and-Kelp were held scoreless for the first time all season in a disappointing result against its in-state, Western Conference foes.

Monterey Bay F.C. earned an early corner in the match, however it led directly to a counter attack for the hosts. Christian Sorto drove the ball down the field and initiated an attack that led to a wide open Thomas Amang just outside the six yard box, but he skied his chance at an easy open net goal. However, Amang would make up for it two short minutes later with a laser from inside the box to give Orange County SC the early 1-0 lead. Monterey Bay came close to evening the score in the 13th minute on the end of Chase Boone’s low cross from the right side, but it missed everyone on the way through and bounced off the far post. 

The Seasiders pushed ahead once again a minute later, but the shot by Rafa Baca – that was seemingly deflected – missed to the outside of the left post for a goal kick. In the 19th minute, a looping header from Chuy Enríquez looked dangerous for a moment, but it missed just over the top of the crossbar. Tristan Trager then had a look with a header of his own a minute later, but it was caught by the goalkeeper just under the bar. Monterey Bay continued to apply heavy pressure in the attack, leading to a whipped-in header from Carlos Guzmán in the 23rd minute that had eyes for the bottom-left corner, but it was saved by the outstretched glove of the goalkeeper. The save spilled the ball back into play towards the feet of Kai Greene and Trager, but before they could get a shot off the goalkeeper was able to cover it up. Guzmán got his head onto the end of the ball again in the 29th minute, but it was saved at the near post with a diving effort. In the 41st minute, Boone held the ball up on the left sideline and played a back-heeled ball towards Guzmàn on the overlap. Guzmán then crossed the ball into the box towards Trager, but his header missed over the bar and the half ended with the hosts out in front. Just before the end of the first half, Baca went down with an injury and was replaced by Jerry Ayon. 

Nearly 30 minutes into the second half, Orange County found itself with an opportunity eerily akin to its first chance of the match and saw it end with a similar result as well as the shot by Cameron Dunbar was skied over the crossbar. Then in the 82nd minute, the hosts managed to double their lead with a goal by Ethan Zubak at the far post on the end of a counter to put Orange County up 2-0. Still pushing for its first of the match, Luther Archiméde looked to get behind the defense on a breakaway for Monterey Bay, but the play was whistled dead for a foul in the air. In the fourth of five added minutes, the visitors fired a shot on frame from inside the box to cut the lead in half, but it was blocked and the match ended 2-0 in favor of Orange County SC, leaving Monterey Bay scoreless for the first time so far in 2024.

Golden Memorial Man of the Match

Carlos Guzmán earned tonight’s Golden Memorial Man of the Match – his third such honor of the season so far – for his overall performance on the left side of the formation. Guzmán finished the night with a 78.3% passing accuracy on 46 passes and won nine total duels. In the attack, he recorded three shots, all on target, and two created two additional chances. Meanwhile defensively, Guzmán ended the contest with two clearances, two interceptions, and a tackle.

Monterey Bay Heads Down to Southern California for Fixture with Orange County SC

IRVINE, California (Friday, April 26, 2024) – Monterey Bay F.C. (4-1-2, 14 points) travels South to Irvine for an in-state 7:00 p.m. PT kickoff on Saturday against Orange County SC (3-1-3, 12 points) at Championship Soccer Stadium in Week 8 of the 2024 USL Championship regular season. Heading into the match against its Southern California foes on Saturday, Monterey Bay finds itself with a high-level of confidence in the midst of a four-game winning streak in all competitions, including three straight in regular season league play. During this current four-game stretch that has the Club in second place in the Western Conference through seven weeks, the Crisp-and-Kelp allowed just three goals while also adding eight of their own for a positive five-goal difference. Looking to continue its winning ways, Monterey Bay now heads to Irvine to take on fifth place Orange County SC. 

Orange County comes into the fray having just lost its first match of the season, a 2-0 loss to another in-state side, Sacramento Republic FC.. Before that, however, Orange County had gone undefeated with three wins in its first five matches. Orange County will look to shake off its loss to Republic FC with a bounce-back win at home over the Seasiders. 

Last time the two sides met was in Monterey Bay’s season finale last season at Cardinale Stadium, with Orange County taking a 1-0 win to complete the season double over MBFC behind a first-half goal from Milan Iloski. Before that, the sides met in Irvine on July 1, where Orange County came from behind to win 3-1 with all three of their goals coming in the final 20 minutes of the match. Overall, the series is tied at two wins apiece through four meetings with an even goal difference at four goals apiece as well.

Monterey Bay Comes From Behind to Defeat Memphis 901 FC Away From Home, Earns Fourth Consecutive Win in All Competitions

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Saturday, April 20, 2024) – Monterey Bay F.C. (4-1-2, 14 points) earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Memphis 901 FC (1-5-0, 3 points) at AutoZone Park in Memphis. Tristan Trager scored his fourth goal of the season from the penalty spot in the second half, and Alex Lara headed in the game-winner less than two minutes later to move the Crisp-and-Kelp up into sole possession of second place in the Western Conference through seven weeks. The result marks a third consecutive win in league play for Monterey Bay and extends its streak in all competitions to four.

The hosts got onto the board less than a minute into the match when a clearance off the line by Mobi Fehr smacked right off of the elbow of Alex Lara and this time over the line to give Memphis an immediate 1-0 lead – the fastest goal allowed in Monterey Bay’s early history. Carlos Guzmán came close to grabbing a quick equalizer for the Crisp-and-Kelp, but his header on the end of a corner just missed over the top left corner of the framework. In the 17th minute of the match, Memphis’ Marlon drove down the left side towards the box before cutting back to his right and firing on frame, but quick reflexes from Antony Siaha at the near post denied the hosts a second goal. Memphis looked to have that second goal just before the end of the first half with a volley shot by Bruno Lapa from the center of the box, but it was hit right at Siaha and caught to send the sides into the halftime break.

Still in search of the equalizer, Monterey Bay looked likely to get it just seven minutes into the second half when Morey Doner crossed a ball into a dangerous area inside the box that landed at the feet of Guzmàn, but the ensuing shot was saved by the Memphis goalkeeper. Then, Chase Boone made a move down the left sideline and crossed a ball into the box in the 56th minute of the match, but it was plucked out of the air by the keeper. Five minutes later, Doner whipped another ball into Boone inside the box, but his strong header was caught by the goalkeeper once again. The visitors earned a free kick from 35 yards out in the 67th minute of the match, and with the ball in the air, Fehr was knocked down inside the box and awarded a penalty. Finally finding the equalizer, Trager stepped up to the spot and converted the penalty to the center of the goal. Less than 90 seconds later, Monterey Bay pushed forward again to earn a corner kick. This time, Chuy Enríquez’ whipped-in ball found the head of Lara, who sharply redirected it inside the far post and into the back of the net and all of a sudden the Crisp-and-Kelp owned a 2-1 lead. Enríquez almost added a third in the 84th minute of the match with a half-volley, but his right-footed shot missed over the top of the crossbar and Monterey Bay held on the rest of the way to earn the full three points on the night in true, come-from-behind fashion.

Golden Memorial Man of the Match

Antony Siaha earns tonight’s Golden Memorial Man of the Match honors. After his side conceded an own goal less than a minute into the match, Siaha kept the Seasiders in the match with four huge saves that otherwise threatened to put the match away in favor of Memphis. Instead, Siaha erased each and every attempt on goal by the hosts in the match, allowing Monterey Bay to sneak in front late and take all the points.

• The own goal by Alex Lara 56 seconds into the match is now the fastest goal allowed in Club history to date, a mark previously set by Switchbacks’ Juan Tejada, who scored one minute and 31 seconds into the match against MBFC at Weidner Field in Colorado Springs on July 4, 2023.

MONTEREY BAY F.C. VISITS AUTOZONE PARK FOR FIXTURE WITH MEMPHIS 901 FC

Monterey Bay F.C. comes into the match against Memphis 901 FC on the back of two consecutive wins in league play and three consecutive wins overall after the Club’s win over Irvine Zeta FC in the Third Round of the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night. Currently, the Crisp-and-Kelp sit alone in third place in the Western Conference after a solid start to the campaign.

On the other side, Memphis 901 FC is struggling to collect its footing amidst an ongoing four-game losing skid in league play and will look to get back on track in the comforts of home on Saturday night. Memphis did, however, secure victory in its respective U.S. Open Cup match on Wednesday night with a 2-0 win over Miami United to curb its slide overall, but when it comes to league competition, 901 FC’s move to the Western Conference has been anything but friendly thus far.

Monterey Bay and Memphis have only faced off one other time in the two clubs’ histories – a 1-0 win for the Seasiders behind an Alex Dixon penalty kick in the first half at AutoZone Park last September. Memphis’ first trip to Seaside is coming up quickly, but for now, the second-ever meetings between the sides will take place right back in Memphis, where 901 FC has already lost twice this season.

MBFC DRAWS SACRAMENTO AWAY FOR 2024 LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP ROUND OF 32

SEASIDE, California (Thursday, April 18, 2024) – With this morning’s draw concluded, Monterey Bay F.C. has announced that the Club’s Round of 32 draw against Sacramento Republic FC in the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will take place on Tuesday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. PT at Heart Health Park in Sacramento. A live broadcast of the match will be available at watch.usopencup.com and uslsoccer.com. 

Monterey Bay’s opening fixture of this year’s U.S. Open Cup was met with victory for the Crisp-and-Kelp over National Independent Soccer Association (NISA) side Irvine Zeta FC. A game-winning brace from Salinas native Jerry Ayon in his Club debut led Monterey Bay on the night as the Seasiders officially advanced to the Round of 32 for the second consecutive year, this time facing off against Sacramento Republic FC in Group Lopez. In addition, the newly-introduced, bracket-style set up means that the winner of the Monterey Bay vs Sacramento fixture will automatically host the winner of San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) and Oakland Roots SC.

For the Round of 32, eight additional Championship (Division II) clubs – including Sacramento – have entered the tournament alongside eight Major League Soccer (MLS, Division I) sides. Winners from the 16 round three contests were then paired against the 16 newly-entering sides and placed into mini-brackets – each of which were named after figures linked to the rich history of U.S. Soccer and the U.S. Open Cup.

Similar to England’s famous FA Cup, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is U.S. Soccer’s National Club Championship. Now in its 109th edition, it is a single-elimination tournament that has crowned a champion every year since 1914. The history-filled tournament is open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. In 1999, the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt. 

The winner of the 2024 U.S. Open Cup will receive $300,000 in prize money and an automatic berth in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, akin to Europe’s well-known annual Champions League and Europa League tournaments. The runner-up will earn $100,000, while the team that advances the furthest from each lower division will take home a $25,000 cash prize. MONTEREY BAY ADVANCES TO ROUND OF 32 IN 2024 LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP BEHIND BRACE FROM SALINAS’ JERRY AYON

SEASIDE, California (Wednesday, April 17, 2024) – Monterey Bay F.C. (3-1-2, 11 points) advanced to the Round of 32 in the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 2-1 win over NISA side Irvine Zeta FC at Cardinale Stadium, presented by Ivan’s Baked Potatoes. After signing with the Club on Monday, Salinas native Jerry Ayon earned the start and recorded a game-winning brace in his debut match donning the Crisp and Kelp.

Monterey Bay began applying pressure on goal from the second the opening whistle was blown. Two minutes into the match, Chuy Enríquez cut across the box to the right and fired a shot on goal, but it was saved at the bottom left corner. A few minutes later, Michael Gonzalez whipped a ball into a dangerous area inside the six-yard box, but the cross missed Luther Archimède’s head by mere inches. In the 17th minute, Walmer Martínez sent another ball into the box toward Archimède, but his header was saved by the goalkeeper. Four minutes later, Gonzalez rose up to connect on the end of a corner kick, but his header bounced off the far post and out. Monterey Bay finally broke through in the 32nd minute. Rafa Baca drove into the left side of the box and flipped the ball up and into the six as he neared the endline. Sprinting forward with purpose, Ayon positioned himself well to get onto the end of the pass and with his head, buried it into the top netting to give the Crisp-and-Kelp the one goal lead at the halftime break.

Irvine Zeta FC leveled the match a quarter of an hour into the second half with a goal from George Almeida to bring the score to 1-1, but Monterey Bay F.C. remained unphased and retook the lead just moments later. In the 65th minute, Enríquez pinged a long-ball to Ayon making a run down the left sideline. Ayon cut inside with the ball and let go on a shot from just outside the box that beat the goalkeeper to give Monterey Bay back the lead at 2-1. In the 77th minute, Archimède looked to have his first in goal Crisp-and-Kelp when he fired a right-footed laser from just inside the box, but it was cleared off the line with a last-ditch kick by an Irvine Zeta FC defender. Monterey Bay came close to adding a third on two additional occasions. In the 83rd minute, Morey Doner tracked down a long ball from Mobi Fehr on the right side before making a defender miss at the endline and firing a grassburner across the six-yard box, but with defenders surrounding the area, Adrian Rebollar was unable to make solid contact and Irvine managed to clear. Then in the dying moments of the match, Ryan Dieter took a chance at goal, but his curling effort missed just wide of the far post and the match ended 2-1 in favor of the hosts.
