Monterey Bay Adds Australian Defender Jacob Muir

SEASIDE, California (Friday, December 20, 2024) – Monterey Bay Football Club (Monterey Bay F.C.) announces today that the Club has signed Australian defender Jacob Muir to a one-year contract with an option for 2026, pending league and federation approval. The latest offseason acquisition gives MBFC a young, versatile defender ahead of the new campaign.

“Jacob’s versatility and his ability to read the game and make intelligent decisions under pressure set him apart,” explained Monterey Bay F.C. Technical Director Simon Dawkins. “His physicality and technical attributes have impressed us, and his ability to be composed on the ball will be a vital part of how we want to play next season. With a player like Jacob, you can always expect to see 100% effort. I have no doubt he will become a fan favorite because he is a leader who wants to win.”

Muir, 22, made his professional debut with the senior team of his hometown club at the age of 19, three years after joining the Perth Glory FC Academy. The senior debut appearance came in a late 2021 Australia Cup match against Melbourne Victory. The following April, Muir made his A-League debut as a starter on the back line against Wellington Phoenix, playing the full 90 minutes. He went on to finish the season with four additional starts.

“I am extremely excited to be joining Monterey Bay for the upcoming 2025 season,” said Muir. “At Perth, I had come to a point in my career where I was looking for a new challenge, so when MBFC expressed their interest, I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to go and prove myself in a new environment. I have learned a lot during my last four years being in a professional environment under different coaches, and I’m excited to bring my passing, vision, defensive attributes and other skill sets to this side.”

As he impressively progressed through the Perth Glory FC Academy, Muir was named the captain of the academy first team. From there, the Perth local went on to make 36 senior appearances (27 starts) in all competitions across three seasons from 2021-2024. Muir scored the first goal of professional career in an Australia Cup match against Moreton City Excelsior this past August, which also happened to be his final match with the club. Overall, Muir played a total of 2,211 minutes for Perth Glory FC and added three assists.

“Since signing for Monterey Bay, I have spoken to a few people I know who have visited Monterey, and I have had nothing but amazing reports back from them,” explained Muir. “I am super excited to be involved in such a great community and can’t wait to meet the many people that make the community as thriving as it is. I hope to give the Monterey Bay F.C. fans the success that they have been looking for since the inaugural season of this club. I will do everything I can defensively and offensively to help my teammates and coaching staff improve on what they were already building last year and help the team make the playoffs for the first time.”

USL Championship and Monterey Bay F.C. Announce 2025 Schedule

SEASIDE, California (Thursday, December 19, 2024) – The USL Championship has officially unveiled the full 2025 schedule, which includes the debut of the Championship’s league-wide participation in the USL Jägermeister Cup – marking the beginning of a groundbreaking interleague competition. Monterey Bay Football Club (Monterey Bay F.C.) is set to play its usual 34 match campaign, though it will follow a slightly different structure to accommodate the incoming USL Jägermeister Cup. 30 matches will count towards the regular season table with the other four considered cup competition.

Monterey Bay opens the 2025 campaign away from home on Saturday, March 8 against San Antonio FC, with the club’s highly-anticipated home opener at Cardinale Stadium taking place a week later on Saturday, March 15 against NorCal rivals Oakland Roots SC. The following month features a visit from the defending USL Championship Title Winners Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Saturday, April 12.

The Crisp-and-Kelp kick off the 2025 USL Jägermeister Cup with two home matches in a week against USL League One side Spokane Velocity FC on Wednesday, May 28, and Orange County SC on Saturday, May 31. Regular season play resumes the following weekend, with league newcomers Lexington SC paying their inaugural visit to the Central Coast on Saturday, June 7.

In regular season play, Monterey Bay will face off against each Western Conference team twice (home and away) in addition to eight matches with out-of-conference opponents (four home, four away). The regular season finale for Monterey Bay will fall on Saturday, October 25 at home in Seaside against Las Vegas Lights FC. The playoff structure remains the same as the previous two seasons with the top eight teams from each conference qualifying for the playoffs, a single-elimination bracket.

Monterey Bay closes out group play in the Jägermeister Cup with away matches against Oakland on Saturday, June 28 and League One’s AV Alta FC on Saturday, July 26. The new cup will consist of six regional groups of six or seven teams. Each team will play four matches – two home, two away – in group play with home assignments being randomly drawn. The Crisp-and-Kelp will be joined in Group 1 by AV Alta, Las Vegas Lights FC, Oakland, Orange County, Sacramento Republic FC, and Spokane.

The 2025 USL Jägermeister Cup will feature all 38 professional men’s clubs competing in a World Cup-style tournament throughout the regular season. Adding more meaningful matches to the annual calendar, the USL Jägermeister Cup includes fan-first modifications to encourage attacking soccer, such as penalty shootouts to determine match winners during the group stage and goals scored as the first tiebreaker in the group standings. After the group stage, a draw will set the matchups for the single-elimination knockout rounds. The USL Jägermeister Cup will conclude with the Final on the weekend of Oct. 1.

Monterey Bay Brings Back Forward Diego Gutiérrez

SEASIDE, California (Wednesday, December 18, 2024) – Monterey Bay Football Club (Monterey Bay F.C.) announces today that the Club has re-signed forward Diego Gutiérrez ahead of the 2025 campaign, pending league and federation approval. The new deal secures Gutiérrez’ stay in Monterey Bay after the club initially acquired the forward via transfer from Charleston Battery back in August.

“Bringing Diego back and making his initial transfer permanent is a good move for us,” said Monterey Bay F.C. Technical Director Simon Dawkins. “Diego is a player who needs to get into a rhythm, needs to string a run of games together to build on his performances. We saw in the last two games of the season what he is capable of, so we’re really excited to have him back. I believe in Diego, I have seen the ability he has on a daily basis. Fans can look forward to seeing an exciting, technical player who can score and assist.”

Gutiérrez, 25, capped off the 2024 campaign in style, scoring his first goal for the Crisp-and-Kelp in the regular-season finale – a penalty kick against FC Tulsa that he earned with a long, skillful run into the box. Overall, the Omaha, Nebraska native appeared in eight matches (five starts) for the club following his addition to the squad late in the season. In a limited number of matches, the forward logged 481 minutes while creating six chances in the attack. Now looking ahead to preseason, Gutiérrez will continue his integration into head coach Jordan Stewart’s system and is expected to provide a solid spark in the attack.

“I’m just super excited to be back on the field with some of the guys and this coaching staff,” said Gutiérrez. “I believe in the process and this culture change that the coaching staff is applying. I think it’s going to be a great turn around and a new chapter for both the team and the community. We’re going to do our best for ourselves, the staff, and of course the fans. I believe that we will bring joy to everyone with the way we will play. We’re going to take a big step forward and do everything we can to make a playoff push, go deep into the postseason, and compete for trophies.”

SEASIDE, California (Wednesday, December 11, 2024) – Monterey Bay Football Club (Monterey Bay F.C.) has announced an addition to the coaching staff ahead of the 2025 USL Championship campaign. Head Coach Jordan Stewart will be joined on the touchline by Assistant Coach Jeremy Clark as the former continues to finalize his staff. Previously, Clark worked closely alongside Stewart within the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) organization as members of the coaching staff for MLS NEXT Pro side The Town FC.

“I’m thrilled to join the coaching staff at Monterey Bay F.C. as the Assistant Coach,” said Clark. “After spending time reflecting on my career and the next step in my journey, I knew that this was the right opportunity to grow and contribute to a club with a strong vision and an exciting future. The philosophy and ambition of this club, along with the potential for success in the USL Championship, really aligns with my own values as a coach.”

“For the 2025 season, my primary goals are to support the team’s continued growth, help our players achieve their individual and collective objectives, and work towards securing a playoff spot,” continued Clark. “Monterey Bay F.C. is in a great position to build on the momentum from the end of last season, and my focus is on helping the team take the next step-both on the field and within the community. I’m excited about the challenges and opportunities ahead, and I look forward to working alongside Jordan and the entire club as we pursue success together.”

Prior to his time with The Town FC, Clark, 35, served as the head goalkeeper coach for Albion SC in San Diego. Before that, he was the head goalkeeper coach for fellow USL Championship side Oakland Roots SC during the club’s inaugural season in 2021. 

​​“Jeremy is a guy who thinks similar to me, but also he’s not just a guy who’s going to be an echo in the room,” explained Stewart. “He’s going to tell me his ideas, give me feedback, and not be shy of sharing his thoughts. And that for me is a big thing, having a guy you can trust. He has deep knowledge of the USL Championship, MLS NEXT Pro, and the college system as well. His vast knowledge of those aspects will help us in identifying players as an organization.”

In addition, the Sterling Heights, Michigan native has held coaching roles with Minnesota United FC (MLS), Detroit City FC, UC San Diego, Santa Barbara SC, UC Santa Barbara, and the two universities he attended – Michigan State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree, and the University of Evansville, where he completed his Master’s degree.

“One of the key factors that led me to make this move is my ongoing relationship with Head Coach Jordan,” Clark explained. “Having worked closely with him in the past, I have seen firsthand his leadership, tactical insight, and unwavering commitment to developing players both on and off the field. Joining him at Monterey Bay is an opportunity I’m eager to embrace. Our professional chemistry and mutual understanding will be crucial as we continue to build a competitive and positive environment for the players and the entire organization.”

Stewart continued, “similar to me, he’s going to bring energy and hold people accountable. He’ll be a sponge that will absorb all of the information that I’m giving, as well as from the players. I can recall as a player myself, you have the head coach, but the assistant is normally the bridge in between. So having a guy that is approachable like Jeremy is super important, especially for our players. He will give them good guidance and be another person to really help them out.”

Monterey Bay F.C. Appoints Simon Dawkins As Technical Director

SEASIDE, California (Monday, December 9, 2024) – Monterey Bay Football Club (Monterey Bay F.C.) has appointed Simon Dawkins as the first Technical Director in club history. With the club since its inaugural campaign in 2022, Dawkins journey in Seaside took him through to the end of his professional playing career. Now, Dawkins is set to remain with the club as he officially begins the next chapter of his career.

“I’ve been here since nearly day one, and it has truly felt like home for me,” said Dawkins. “I really like the environment and this community. The people that I work with here every day are great, and I’m looking forward to building what is next for us – our plan to move forward as a club. I’m especially excited individually because coming from the standpoint of being a player and retiring here – it was very important to me to stay with the club. As I considered my next professional venture, it was critical for me to be somewhere where I felt very comfortable, so I’m really excited for this role because I am already familiar with the returning players and everyone here. I’m happy to work alongside Mike [DiGiulio], Jordan [Stewart], and everyone in our front office.”

Dawkins, 37, officially retired from 20 years of professional soccer this past August and took over as the assistant coach on an interim basis shortly thereafter. With the offseason fully underway, Dawkins will now hit the ground running in his new and instrumental role within the club. As the Technical Director, Dawkins will oversee the sporting side of the club, tasked with building a winning culture – a job that will require him to piece together the right characters, those with a team-first mentality first and foremost.

“I could not be happier to have Simon assume the role of the first Technical Director in club history,” said Monterey Bay F.C. President, Mike DiGiulio. “Simon exemplifies everything our club stands for. The London, England native will have a crucial hand in developing the club’s overall structure from the youth ranks through to the first team, ultimately ensuring that everyone from the coaching staff to the players is pushing in the right, positive direction. Striving to strengthen the connection between the youth teams in the tri-county area and Monterey Bay’s development program, Dawkins believes the recipe for sustained success lies in pushing the club’s young players to be great and helping them earn opportunities as early as possible. Dawkins will also play a large role in the construction of the first team roster – focusing on players that will not only put the club first, but those who want to get to the next level and will do whatever it takes to win once they step out onto the pitch.

“My main goal is to create a winning mentality here,” continued Dawkins. “I fully understand that it’s not realistic to win every single game, but as long as you have a structure and a winning mentality in place, you can build on that. Get the right type of players in, and you’re eventually going to see success on the field. We want to make this a place where everybody wants to be on Saturday night. A place to see exciting results with exciting players on the field. If we can do that, then for me, that is altogether a job done.”

Monterey Bay Signs Forward Mayele Malango Ahead of 2025 Campaign

SEASIDE, California (Friday, December 6, 2024) – Monterey Bay Football Club (Monterey Bay F.C.) announces today that the Club has agreed to terms with forward Mayele Malango on a one-year contract with an option for 2026, pending league and federation approval. The move gives Monterey Bay an exciting presence in the attack going into the 2025 USL Championship campaign.

“Mayele is a dynamic player who will excite our fans with his attacking flair,” said Monterey Bay F.C. Head Coach Jordan Stewart. “He’s hungry for success and ready to elevate our team. We’re really excited to bring him into the squad.”

Malango, 27, began his professional career with New England Revolution II in 2020. Over the next two seasons, the Kinshasa, Zaire native spent time with National Independent Soccer Association (NISA) sides New Amsterdam FC and Albion San Diego before signing with USL League One side Chattanooga Red Wolves SC in 2023. With the Red Wolves, Malango scored nine goals and added two assists in 47 total appearances. Now, Malango continues his journey with a move to Seaside, California.

“I feel really great and super happy to sign with Monterey Bay. I’m ready to join the team and contribute as much as I can both on the pitch and in the community. I can’t wait to get started. My friend Nevello [Yoseke] played there two seasons ago and he told me a lot about the club, the organization, the area, the community and the fans – and I loved all he had to say about it. I’m super excited to be part of something special like that. I’m looking forward to meeting all of the fans, my teammates, the staff, and creating a bond with everyone here.”

Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malango and his family were forced to flee due to conflict and spent 10 years as refugees in Malawi. At the age of 17, Malango and his family made the journey stateside to Lowell, Massachusetts, where he later committed to Salem State University in 2017. At Salem State, Malango was named both the MASCAC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year enroute to leading the school to its first conference title in over a decade. From there, Malango made the jump to Division I university UMass Lowell.

“I’m very much a team player. I’m always open to listen and learn from the other guys. Any teammate can ask me anything and I will always be there for them. I like to support my teammates. Ultimately, my personal goal is to win a championship. I want to win a trophy next season, I want to be champion with Monterey Bay. I want to score a lot of goals and will work as hard as I can to help our club be successful and lift that trophy.”

SEASIDE, California (Thursday, December 5, 2024) – Monterey Bay Football Club (Monterey Bay F.C.) announced today that the club has re-signed defender Alex Lara ahead of the 2025 USL Championship campaign, pending league and federation approval. Returning for his third season in Seaside, Lara provides a consistent and physical presence on the back line for Monterey Bay.

“Lara has made significant strides since I joined the club,” said Monterey Bay F.C. Head Coach Jordan Stewart. “His professional work ethic and positive attitude are exactly the qualities we need in our locker room and on the pitch. We’re looking forward to having him back.”

Lara has been a menace on the back line for Monterey Bay and a true last line of defense on multiple occasions. In nearly 3,000 minutes played across 41 appearances (33 starts), the Azusa, California native has consistently boasted a fiery presence and physicality for the Crisp and Kelp. Coming into 2025, Lara currently sits fourth in club history in both clearances with 128 and blocks with 36. Lara has also added three emphatic goals for Monterey Bay, one of which was a 70th-minute, game-winning header in a 2-1 win at Memphis back in April. In addition, Lara has totaled 62 tackles and 54 interceptions defensively.

“I’m so happy to be back for another year with Monterey Bay,” said Lara. “Having another opportunity to represent this club and wonderful community is always something to be proud of. I feel like me and all of the returning players are really going to step up and lead on and off the pitch. I know that everyone at the club is working harder than ever to accomplish our goal of not only making the playoffs but making a run at a championship as well. I am looking forward to seeing all of our fans back out there.”

SEASIDE, California (Wednesday, December 4, 2024) – Monterey Bay Football Club (Monterey Bay F.C.) announced today that the club has re-signed defender Grant Robinson ahead of the 2025 USL Championship campaign, pending league and federation approval. Having donned the Crisp and Kelp since the Club’s inaugural season in 2022, Robinson is now set to return for his fourth year in Seaside.

“We’re excited to see Grant’s development this year,” said Monterey Bay F.C. Head Coach Jordan Stewart. “He’s incredibly talented, and it will be our job to help him overcome his past injuries and reach his full potential.”

One of the top young left backs in the league, the Columbia, Maryland native has played 4,166 minutes in 56 matches for the Union (48 starts) thus far. He also currently sits third in Club history in interceptions with 86. Overall, Robinson has added two goals, an assist, and 37 chances created in the attack throughout his time with Monterey Bay, in addition to 95 tackles, 87 clearances, and nine blocks defensively.

“I’m very excited to re-sign with the club for my fourth season,” said Robinson “It means a lot to be able to wear this crest and I’m grateful to the coaches and front office for believing in me once again. I’m eager to get back to work and to help the club achieve our goals on and off the field. Monterey Bay has been a great home for me as well, and I’m looking forward to remaining in this great community.”

Monterey Bay Re-Signs Club’s All-Time Leading Goalscorer

SEASIDE, California (Tuesday, December 3, 2024) – Monterey Bay Football Club (Monterey Bay F.C.) announced today that the club has re-signed forward Alex Dixon ahead of the 2025 USL Championship campaign, pending league and federation approval. The club’s record-holder for goals in a single season and one of the league’s all-time leaders in goals, assists, minutes, and appearances returns for his third campaign with the Crisp-and-Kelp and the 15th of his professional career.

“It was important for us to retain Alex Dixon for our 2025 roster,” said Monterey Bay F.C. Head Coach Jordan Stewart. “His 20,000 plus minutes of experience in the league offer invaluable wisdom and insight, making him a valuable mentor both on and off the field.”

Dixon has played over 4,300 minutes for the Union the past two seasons across 57 appearances (53 starts). Not only does the Bay City, Texas native hold the single-season goal-scoring record for Monterey Bay with 12, he shares the top spot in club history for goals scored all-time with 16. Now officially signed on for a third season in Seaside, Dixon is primed to continue one of the best USL Championship careers in the league’s history. Dixon is currently third all-time in USL Championship appearances with 276 – just two appearances away from moving up into sole possession of second – and sits ninth all-time in league history with 20,387 minutes played and counting. In addition, the forward is currently 12th all-time in USL Championship history with 64 goals, and 13th all-time with 34 assists.

“I am super excited to re-sign with Monterey Bay,” said Dixon. “I’ve loved every minute of playing for this club and I’m excited for what’s to come this season. I think that with my experience, I know what it takes to win in this league. And in the locker room, I’m there to lead by example and help bring the younger players along. I can’t say enough how important the community and the fans have been to us since I’ve been here. Pulling on the Crisp and Kelp and playing in front of them again can’t come soon enough.”

SEASIDE, California (Tuesday, November 19, 2024) – Monterey Bay Football Club has announced its end-of-season roster decisions ahead of the 2025 USL Championship campaign. As of now, seven players from the 2024 squad are primed for a return to Seaside.

The following players have guaranteed contracts for the 2025 season: Luther Archimède, Morey Doner, Mobi Fehr, and Carlos Guzmán. In addition, Monterey Bay FC exercised contract options on Pierce Gallaway, Xavi Gnaulati, and Adrian Rebollar.
