The visitors stepped on the gas from the opening whistle, creating three shots within the first seven minutes of the match. Despite the early activity inside the Union’s 18-yard box, none of Indy Eleven’s first three shots were on target. Morey Doner made a long run down the right sideline before breaking his defender’s ankles in a move to get inside the box, however, his shot missed high and wide. Chuy Enríquez fired a shot aimed at the top-right corner in the 26th minute of the match, but it was parried out for a fruitless corner. In the 43rd minute, Carlos Guzmán clipped a ball to the back post that connected with Chase Boone, but his header went straight at the goalkeeper and was caught, sending the sides scoreless into the halftime break.
Monterey Bay earned a free kick at the hour mark, but the whipped-in ball by Enríquez was headed clear by the Indy Eleven defense. Alex Dixon possessed the ball inside the box in the 68th minute before playing a low ball across the six to Enríquez, but his shot was saved by the goalkeeper at the near post. Then in the 71st minute as the Crisp-and-Kelp continued to inch closer to the opener, Dixon fired a shot from distance that missed just over the top of the crossbar. Then in the 88th minute, a scramble inside the box led to the ball at the feet of Indy Eleven’s Elliot Collier and he smashed it across the line with a right-footed shot to steal a 1-0 result in the final moments at Cardinale Stadium.
