MONTEREY BAY CRASHES THE PARTY IN HAYWARD WITH LATE GAME-WINNING GOAL IN 1-0 SHUTOUT VICTORY
HAYWARD, California (Saturday, April 6, 2024) – Monterey Bay F.C. (2-1-2, 8 points) secured a 1-0 shutout win away from home over Oakland Roots SC (1-3-1, 4 points) at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward behind a late, game-winning goal from super-sub Chase Boone in the 86th minute of the match. Mobi Fehr recorded the assist on the score, his third consecutive match with a goal contribution. With the result, Crisp-and-Kelp goalkeeper Anthony Siaha was credited with his second clean sheet of the season.
Monterey Bay earned the first chance of the night just three minutes in when Tristan Trager intercepted a pass at the half circle of the Roots’ box, but his one-on-one attempt with the goalkeeper was stopped to deny the visitors an early lead. After Adrian Rebollar and Alex Dixon earned the first corner kick of the match in the 11th minute, Kai Greene unleashed a right-footed bicycle attempt on frame, but the ball was headed off the line to keep the Union from the opener once again. Moments later, a long ball over the top was played into the box to Trager, but he was unable to bring it down cleanly between two defenders and the chance went awry. Grant Robinson got involved in the attack in the 29th minute with a pass into the area towards Dixon. Dixon dummied the ball to Trager near the half circle, who then turned and fired a shot aimed at the bottom-left corner, but it was saved. Oakland jumped out on the counter after a Union turnover in the 43rd minute, but Monterey Bay recovered nicely to force the hosts into a goal kick. Monterey Bay then sprung a counter of their own in the final seconds of the half, but the shot by Trager missed just wide of the left post and the half came to a close without a score.
Roots SC looked likely to bag the opening goal in the 66th minute when second-half substitute Johnny Rodriguez was played into the right side of the 18-yard box, but the shot was blocked by Greene’s incredible defensive effort and the hosts were kept off the board. The Roots looked to have scored the first goal of the match on the end of a counter attack in the 81st minute, but it was called back for offside. Monterey Bay pushed ahead for several chances in the following minutes, but each opportunity lacked a final pass. Then in the 86th minute, Luther Archimède held up strong in possession near the center circle while being swarmed by three Oakland defenders before finding Rebollar in relief. The Watsonville native immediately initiated a counter attack with a ball down the right sideline ahead of Morey Doner, who drove down the pitch before laying the ball off to Fehr at the end of a long run into the box. The goalkeeper evacuated his box in a last minute attempt to put the clamp on the play, but Fehr beat him to the ball with a sliding effort, pushing it across the six-yard box towards Boone for the tap-in, go-ahead goal for the Seasiders with less than five minutes to play in the 90. Then down the final stretch, Monterey Bay remained as shored-up defensively as they had throughout, securing all three points on the night with a 1-0 shutout victory.
