MBFC2 Completes First-Ever Match with 1-1 Draw Against Quakes II in Salinas Classic at Rabobank Stadium
SALINAS, California (Saturday, April 22, 2023) – Monterey Bay F.C. 2 (MBFC2) battled MLS Next side San Jose Earthquakes II (Quakes II) to a 1-1 draw in the inaugural Salinas Classic at Rabobank Stadium on Saturday, April 22. 21-year-old San Francisco native and current California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) Men’s Soccer player José Jesús Madrigal scored the first-ever goal in MBFC2 history with a screamer from outside the box in the 35th minute of the match to give the USL League Two development club the lead at halftime. Quakes II then tied the match up with a goal in the 86th minute.
“I am very happy and grateful to have the opportunity to play with these great players and coaches,” said Madrigal. “Wearing the MBFC2 crest is more than just soccer for me, it means representing the people. The first goal not only means a lot to me, but also for the team. This is the start of the season and we will only get better.”
With MBFC2 Head Coach Ramiro Corrales on the road in Indianapolis to attend to his responsibilities as the Assistant Coach of the first team, it was up to MBFC2 Assistant Coach Mark Christie to manage the touchline at Rabobank Stadium.
“We knew playing Quakes II would be an extremely tough challenge for this newly formed group,” said MBFC2 Assistant Coach Mark Christie. “The players showed incredible discipline, teamwork and passion. You could sense the joy from all the players and staff when José Madrigal produced a moment of magic. There has been a lot of work gone on behind the scenes to make MBFC2 a reality. This result helped to validate the need and decision to start building a second team. We are excited for our inaugural season in USL League Two, but we know we have a lot of work to do.”
MBFC2 will now wrap up its preseason over the next two weeks as it simultaneously ramps up towards its inaugural 12-match USL League Two regular season campaign on Saturday, May 6 as hosts to San Francisco City FC at Rabobank Stadium.
