Connections: Loudoun United FC defender Grant Lillard spent the 2013-2014 seasons in the Chicago Fire youth academy, the same time in which current Monterey Bay F.C. Head Coach Frank Yallop helmed the first team in Chicago. Another defender from the Eastern Conference side, Jalen Robinson, shares a connection with the Union as well. Robinson made occasional appearances alongside Hugh Roberts with the Richmond Kickers from 2014-2016 while on loan from DC United.
Opponent’s Previous Match: Loudoun United FC traveled to Alabama on Wednesday, July 27 for a midweek match against Birmingham Legion FC. The hosts struck first with a goal from Bruno Lapa in the 22nd minute of the match before adding a penalty kick scores in the 31st to double their lead. Lapa then scored again in the 43rd minute, and another penalty was awarded and converted in the 49th to blow the match open one minute after Loudoun United’s Houssou Landry received a straight red and left the match. Despite being down a man, Loudoun managed to pull one back in the 54th, but two additional late goals from Birmingham in the 88th and 90+3rd minute of added time put the stamp on a 6-1 defeat for Loudoun.
Notes: Tomorrow’s match will be the first-ever meeting between the sides and the third consecutive Eastern Conference opponent for the Union. In addition, the match will be the furthest that Monterey Bay has traveled for a contest in the club’s short history. Monterey Bay F.C. is 3-7-0 this season on the road, while Loudoun United FC is 3-6-2 as hosts so far in 2022.
