SEASIDE, California (Saturday, July 23, 2022) – Monterey Bay F.C. (6-11-2, 20 points) topped New York Red Bulls II 2-0 on Youth Soccer Night at Cardinale Stadium. Simon Dawkins scored his first goal for the club on an assist from Adrian Rebollar, and second-half substitute Sam Gleadle scored upon his return from injury on a pass from Jason Johnson to put the match away for the Crisp and Kelp.

Monterey Bay F.C. got things started in the 16th minute of the match with a buildup on the right side of the pitch. Rebollar fired a ball into the box that found the head of Dawkins, and Dawkins whipped the header on a line past the goalkeeper and into the left side of the net to give the Crisp and Kelp an early 1-0 lead. In the 20th minute, Mobi Fehr pushed a through ball for Christian Volesky to get onto the end of, but Volesky’s goal was called back for offside. Red Bulls II’s best chance of the half came in the 28th minute, but Michael Knapp’s shot from outside the box hit the corner of the crossbar and back into play. Late in the first half, James Murphy was shown a straight red for a foul in the middle of the field, leaving the Union with 10 men going into the halftime break.
Twelve minutes into the second half, Volesky found himself with another chance on a counterattack by the Union, but his shot missed to the outside of the near post. In the 80th minute of the match, Walmer Martínez cut back to his left foot at the tail end of another counterattack for the hosts, but his shot missed to the left of the frame. Gleadle, who came on for Martínez after he pulled up with an injury in the 86th minute, finished to the goalkeepers right on an assist from Johnson to break the match open for the Union in the 89th minute and the match ended 2-0 in favor of Monterey Bay. The late two-goal lead allowed Monterey Bay F.C. to bring Dallas Jaye on as a substitute in the final moments of the match, allowing the goalkeeper to enter the match to the roar of the crowd in his final professional game before retirement.
Man of the Match: Hunter Gorskie earns player of the match honors for Monterey Bay with a strong defensive performance against New York Red Bulls II on the night. In just his second start for the team, Gorskie occupied the holding midfield position and recorded six tackles, five clearances, and four interceptions. He helped the team on the attack as well, creating one chance to score. He finished the match with a passing accuracy of 67.6% and won eight duels. Gorskie’s defensive effort helped give the Crisp and Kelp their third-consecutive shutout.

– Dallas Jaye registered his final professional appearance between the sticks against New York Red Bulls II tonight, just one month shy of six years after making his United Soccer League debut, also against New York Red Bulls II, on August 28, 2016 with FC Cincinnati.
