Possession leaned toward the Monterey Bay F.C. in the early minutes of the match. The Union created the match’s first real chance in the 8th minute, but Christian Volesky’s shot was cleared off the line by the Detroit City FC defense. Minutes later, another chance for the home side was created by Adrian Rebollar, but his cross into the mix was snuffed out of the box. Detroit City’s first dangerous chance came in the 20th minute, but the point-blank header was saved by Antony Siaha to keep the visitors off the board. Monterey Bay F.C. had another chance on frame in the 24th minute, but Volesky’s shot missed to the left of the goal. Later, Simon Dawkins fired off a shot that missed to the left of the frame and despite a flurry of chances for the hosts in the half, the sides went into the break scoreless.
A giveaway in the 66th minute forced Dawkins into a foul, and Detroit City FC’s ensuing free kick from just outside the box missed over the top. In the 75th minute, second half substitute Seku Conneh made a dangerous run down the middle of the pitch that led to the forward being taken down outside the box, but his free kick was too powerful and cleared the crossbar. With the Union pushing for the game-winning goal, second half substitute Jason Johnson created a couple of close chances for the hosts. In the 83rd minute, Johnson lasered a ball into Conneh in the middle of the box, but Conneh’s shot missed inches to the outside of the right post. Four minutes later, Johnson did it again with another dangerous ball into the box, but the headed attempt by Chris Cortez missed to the left and the match ended 0-0.
Man of the Match: In his second professional match, Antony Siaha recorded his second consecutive shutout. Supported by a strong backline and aided by newcomer Hunter Gorskie in front of the four, Siaha helped the Union blank the visitors. Statistically, Siaha tallied one save, one punch out and two clearances.
