The Union got things started in the 18th minute of the match when Robbie Crawford found Volesky down the left side with a perfectly timed through ball. Volesky then fired the left-footed shot into the right side of the net to give the Crisp and Kelp the opening 1-0 lead with his first goal in a Monterey Bay F.C. uniform. In the 23rd minute, San Antonio FC looked to equalize, but Carlos Herrera saved the shot from close range. San Antino would eventually breakthrough in the 39th minute, when a save by Herrera was mis-cleared by the Monterey Bay F.C. defense for an own goal to bring the score to 1-1. Four minutes later, San Antonio took its first lead of the night when Justin Dhillon chipped the goalkeeper to give the visitors the 2-1 lead into the halftime break.
In the 55th minute of the match, Hugh Roberts fired a header on frame that was pushed out by the goalkeeper back into play in a dangerous position. Volesky and Sam Strong both fired shots on frame with the ball loose in the box, but the San Antonio defense managed to block each attempt at the line. In the 68th minute, Doner pushed down the right side of the pitch and fired a cross into a dangerous area of the box that forced San Antonio into an own goal to bring the match level at 2-2. Then, San Antonio retook the lead in the 82nd minute with a goal from Santiago Patino. Shortly after the match entered added time and Monterey Bay F.C. pushing for the final equalizer, the Union earned a flurry of consecutive chances, but San Antonio’s defense remained tough to crack. In the 4th minute of added time, Roberts was dismissed from the game after being shown his second yellow card to leave the Union with 10 men for the final minute, and the match ended 3-2 in favor of San Antonio.
