Following several early chances to start the match by Sacramento Republic FC, Monterey Bay F.C. found its first chance of the night in the 17th minute. At the end of a run down the left side of the pitch, Boone fired a shot on goal but it was saved by the goalkeeper. With four minutes to play in the first half, Republic FC sent a cross into the box from the left side, but it was cleared away in front of goal by Grant Robinson to keep Sacramento off the scoreboard. Then in the 45th minute of the match, Monterey Bay F.C. attacked down the left side with build up play between Walmer Martínez and Sam Gleadle. Gleadle’s shot was blocked back to the feet of Chris Cortez, who’s ensuing shot was blocked out for a corner and the sides went scoreless into the break.
In the 62nd minute of the second half, following a corner kick by Sacramento, the ball dropped down to Republic FC defender Jack Gurr. Gurr then rocketed a shot at goal, but a fingertip save by Dallas Jaye pushed the ball wide enough to deflect off of the inside of the far post, bounce back across the face of goal and out for a goal kick. Two minutes later, Jiro Barriga Toyama gained possession and pushed the ball up the left side of the pitch before crossing the ball into the box. The pass found the head of Hugh Roberts, but his header missed over the top of the crossbar and the scoreline remained 0-0.
In the 76th minute, Boone led Martínez into a dangerous position with a pass down the left flank. Martínez’ cross into the box found Cortez, but the attempt was mistimed and the chance to take the lead missed by inches. Minutes later, Sacramento was awarded a penalty kick for a foul in the box, and Rodrigo Lopez buried the shot to give the home side the 1-0 lead. With a chance to equalize in the 83rd minute, Monterey Bay F.C. earned a corner, but the ensuing header by Cortez was saved by the goalkeeper. Four minutes later, the home side were awarded a second penalty and converted to double their lead, but the visitors would not go away quietly as the fight in the Union showed through again. In the first minute of added time, Boone pulled a goal back for Monterey Bay. His header off of a Robbie Crawford cross into the box cut the deficit in half. With one last chance for the Union to equalize in the 4th minute of added time, Cortez lined up for a free kick opportunity, but his grass-burning ball missed everyone on its way through the box and missed just wide of the left post, ending the match 2-1.
Man of the Match: Chase Boone’s performance earns the forward his second consecutive man of the match. His headed goal in the 90+1 minute of the night was his third overall in the last two matches and gave late life to the Union.
