Records: Sacramento Republic FC (2-1-0, 6 points); Monterey Bay F.C. (1-2-0, 3 points)
Previous Matchups: Monterey Bay’s third match was the charm as the club earned its first win in club history with a 3-2 victory over Oakland Roots SC. After two goals from Chase Boone were matched with two goals from Oakland, Hugh Roberts headed home the game-winner in the 90th minute to spoil the Roots SC home-opener.
Sacramento’s previous match was held at home in Heart Health Park against FC Tulsa. The visitors opened the scoring with a goal in the 29th minute that was matched four minutes later by Republic FC’s Martinez Jr. The difference in the match came in the 86th minute when Sacramento’s Duke Lacroix scored to put the home side on top and give Republic FC the 2-1 win.
Connections: Monterey Bay F.C. goalkeeper Rafi Díaz spent the 2018-2021 seasons with Sacramento Republic FC. He recorded nine clean sheets in 27 total appearances for the Northern California club, and earned Republic FC’s Save of the Year honors for a double-save in a match against El Paso Locomotive FC in September 2021.
Notes: Despite meeting in the preseason, this will be the first true matchup between the sides. The Union will look to ride the momentum from last week’s victory and beat its second consecutive Northern California club. Monterey Bay F.C. is 1-2-0 all-time on the road, while Sacramento Republic FC is 59-27-32 all-time as hosts.
