LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Saturday, May 21, 2022) – In the club’s first test against an Eastern Conference opponent, Monterey Bay F.C. (3-7-0, 9 points) shutout Louisville City FC 2-0 at Lynn Family Stadium in Week 11 of the USL Championship Regular Season to give the hosts their first home loss of the season. With the victory, the Union became the first USL Championship expansion side to win in Louisville since Birmingham Legion FC in 2019.
Midfielders Mobi Fehr and Sam Gleadle each opened their goalscoring accounts for Monterey Bay F.C. in the second half of the match, while goalkeeper Dallas Jaye earned his first clean sheet as a member of the Union.
Louisville City FC jumped onto the front foot first in the match. In the 8th minute, LouCity applied pressure down the right side of the pitch and fired a ball into the box that took a deflection off of a Union defender before bouncing off the crossbar and back into play. Louisville quickly regained possession a minute later and pushed down the right side again. This time, the shot from LouCity ricocheted off the top corner of the post to keep the hosts off the board. In the 40th minute, Morey Doner earned a foul when he was taken down in the middle of a run down the right sideline. The ensuing free kick found its way beyond the hosts end line, leading to the Crisp and Kelp’s second corner kick of the match and best chance of the half. Chase Boone headed the ball back into the six-yard box and Adrian Rebollar rose up to flick the ball on frame, but the ball was scraped off the line by the goalkeeper and the sides went scoreless into the halftime break.
Monterey Bay F.C. struck first in the 58th minute of the match. After Boone secured a corner kick for the Union, James Murphy curled the ball perfectly into the box and Fehr got onto the end of it to head it across the line and give the visitors the 1-0 lead. LouCity looked to equalize in the 73rd minute when Jorge Gonzalez snuck past the back line and got onto the end of the through ball, but his left-footed shot was saved by Jaye. The Union doubled their lead four minutes later when Gleadle stepped in front of a pass to spark the counter for the Crisp and Kelp before orchestrating a give-and-go with Christian Volesky that led to Gleadle burying the ball into the far-side net to put Monterey Bay F.C. on top 2-0. In the 90th minute of the match, Louisville City earned a corner, but the ensuing header missed wide to the right and Monterey Bay held on for the upset, shutout victory.
Man of the Match: Defender Hugh Roberts did his part and more to ensure that Monterey Bay F.C. preserved the shutout on the night. Not only did Roberts record a season-high eight clearances in the match, he also tallied two interceptions and steered clear of the whistle. In addition, the team captain won an impressive 11 of 13 duels, including five of six in the air, for a total duel success rate of 84.6%.
