MONTEREY BAY F.C. FALLS 2-1 IN SAN ANTONIO
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Saturday, March 30, 2024) – Monterey Bay F.C. (1-1-2, 5 points) suffered its first defeat of the season in a 2-1 loss to San Antonio FC (2-0-2, 8 points) at Toyota Field. Walmer Martínez recorded his second assist in as many matches and Mobi Fehr capitalized on the service ball to score the lone goal of the match for the Union, but it was not enough to leave the Lone Star State with any points.
Monterey Bay began the match with a solid spell of majority possession that lasted through the first five minutes. San Antonio then took its turn holding onto possession, and managed to capitalize right away with a headed goal by Carter Manley in the 7th minute to take the early 1-0 lead. In the 20th minute, the Union earned a corner. Martínez played a dangerous ball right to the feet of Fehr inside the box, but his shot aimed at the bottom right corner was cleared off the line by San Antonio FC midfielder Shannon Gomez to keep the visitors off the board. The hosts had a good opportunity to double the lead in the 26th minute, but Juan Agudelo’s shot was blocked by Grant Robinson. With only stoppage time to play in the first half, Alex Dixon ripped the ball with his right foot, but it crashed off the crossbar and back into play. Then in the third minute of first half stoppage time the Crisp-and-Kelp earned a set piece opportunity from about 30 yards out, leading to Martínez stepping up and whipping a perfectly dangerous ball into the area. Fehr crashed towards the six-yard box, connected with the ball on the end of a sliding effort, and smashed it into the right side of the net to level the match at 1-1 going into the halftime break.
Martínez jumped on an opportunity to put a ball on frame a few minutes into the second half from the top of the box, but his shot was deflected wide. In the 60th minute, Michael Gonzalez made his professional debut as a second-half substitute. Five minutes later, San Antonio FC came close to retaking the lead, but the shot was headed off the line by Morey Doner. Gonzalez crossed a good ball into the box in the 75th minute, but Ryan Dieter was unable to get his head on the end of it. Then in the 86th minute, San Antonio FC bagged the winner with a tap-in goal from Kevon Lambert to give the hosts the 2-1 victory and all three points on the night.
