Monterey Bay Stalls on the Road Against Detroit City FC
Hugh Roberts II, Christian Volesky reach career milestones; Union remain winless in month of July
HAMTRAMCK, Michigan (Saturday, July 22, 2023) – Monterey Bay F.C. (7-8-6, 27 points) fell 1-0 on the road to fellow 2022 expansion side Detroit City FC (6-11-5, 23 points) at Keyworth Stadium. The Union have now lost their fourth match of the month and remain winless in five matches thus far in July (0-4-1), a stark contrast to the Club’s undefeated month of June (4-0-0).
The hosts created an opportunity just two minutes into the match when they cut a ball near the endline back across the face of goal to Dario Suarez who was making a run at the top of the six yard box, but his right-footed shot from close range was saved by Antony Siaha at the far post to keep Detroit City FC off the board early. Chase Boone earned a corner for Monterey Bay in the 21st minute when his left-footed, outside-the-foot shot from inside the box was blocked beyond the endline, but the ensuing corner was punched out by the goalkeeper despite looking dangerous. Detroit City came close to scoring the opener in the 25th minute off of a corner, but the second header missed just over the crossbar. Monterey Bay looked to push up the field in the final moments of the first half, but Detroit City managed to clear it away and the sides went into the break level at 0-0.
Monterey Bay began to control more possession at the midway point of the second half. In the 69th minute, patient build up play for the Union resulted in a pass from Christian Volesky to Alex Dixon in the center of the box, but the defense recovered before he could get a shot off. A minute later, the Crisp-and-Kelp pushed ahead again down the right sideline, but the cross into the box from Morey Doner was snuffed out by a Detroit City FC defender. The hosts then created an opportunity of their own inside the box in the 73rd minute, but Kai Greene and the Union defense stood tall to force a goal kick. Detroit City FC found the opening goal two minutes later following a run down the left sideline. The shot from a tight angle by Suarez took a bad bounce off a sliding Alex Lara – who was attempting to block the attempt – and found its way across the line to give the hosts the 1-0 lead with 15 minutes to play. The Union fought for the equalizer with several chances late. One such chance came in the first minute of added time when Boone earned a corner after his cross was blocked beyond the endline, but the corner was cleared away by Detroit City FC and the match ended in favor of the home side.
Up Next: The Crisp-and-Kelp return to Cardinale Stadium this Saturday, July 29 for a fixture with Phoenix Rising FC. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. PT. The match will be broadcast locally via KION on Central Coast CW (35.1 over the air, channel 14 Xfinity), with live streaming available on ESPN+.

– Named a starter, Christian Volesky made his 200th career USL Championship appearance in the match.
– Sam Gleadle missed the match for personal reasons, while Max Glasser (hamstring) and James Murphy (hamstring) missed the match due to injury.
